But what exactly is a vape pen? Simply put, it’s an ultra-portable vaporizer that offers all the benefits of a standard vaporizer in a compact, pen-shaped device. In addition to being potentially better for your body than smoking, vape pens are easy to use, produce a discreet, nearly odorless vapor, and are perfect for taking on the go. How do vaporizer pens work?
When it comes down to the basics, vaporizer pens are simple devices. The only two parts you need to worry about are the heating element and the chamber that holds your herbs, which can be either a dry herb container, a disposable cartridge with concentrate (cartridge), or something similar.
In any case, the heating element brings your herbs to a temperature between 150–230 °C. At these low temperatures, the active compounds in the herb turn into vapor, which you can inhale almost just like with any other vaporizer.
Different Types of Vaporizer Pens
There are currently many different types of vaporizer pens available. You’ll find vaporizers for dry herbs, vaporizers for concentrates, and hybrid vaporizers. As fantastic as this technology is, you can probably tell the difference between them just by their names.
Dry herb vaporizers are, of course, used to vaporize flowers. Concentrate vaporizers, on the other hand, are designed to work with concentrates, which differ in physical consistency. Finally, hybrid vaporizers are designed to work with either flowers or concentrates (the term “hybrid” is also commonly used for vaporizers equipped with both methods of heating the material—conduction and convection).
Anatomy of a Vaporizer Pen
Some of the most important differences between these pens can be seen in their anatomy. However, the differences are not significant.
In most pens, the largest component, which serves as the body, is the battery. Batteries are usually lithium-ion and are either rechargeable or replaceable. They all also have a mouthpiece that you use to inhale your product of choice. This product is vaporized by a heating element. Many devices have a button to activate the heating element, though some are buttonless.
Other pens, however, do not rely on battery power. Instead, they use the heat from a flame provided by a lighter. The result is a fraction of the cost, and they have the added advantage of not needing to be recharged. However, you cannot control the temperature at which the herb vaporizes, and the herb could burn due to the flame. The difference isn’t too dramatic, though, and flame-powered vaporizers are a great choice.
Another key component is the material chamber. Vaporizers for dry herbs feature a chamber that you simply fill. With vaporizers for concentrates, you typically purchase separate disposable cartridges that you discard and replace once empty. Some come with permanent chambers where you can place wax, but these aren’t as common.

How to Use a Vaporizer Pen
Now we can move on to the fun part. Before you do anything, read the instructions for the pen. We’re pretty smart, sure, but the people who made your pen know it better than anyone else. Our instructions apply generally to these types of pens, not to a specific model.
Charging
The first thing you need to do when you get a vaporizer pen is charge it. Make yourself a cup of tea or go for a walk, because the first charge of a new vaporizer can take a while.
Filling
Once your vaporizer pen is charged (an LED light may indicate when it’s ready), insert the cartridge. It will either be a refillable cartridge that you fill with flowers or wax, or a disposable one that you screw on and vape. After inserting the cartridge, assemble the vaporizer pen. Read the instructions to make sure you do it correctly.
Vaporize
Now you’re ready to vaporize! On most button-operated vaporizers, you can turn them on and off by pressing the button five times. Some devices also allow you to adjust the temperature. When using a vaporizer pen for the first time, don’t make the common mistake of taking too deep a drag. Vaporizers require a slow and gentle draw. There’s also no need to “hold” the vapor in your lungs, as the good stuff in the cartridge is absorbed immediately.
Best Practices for Using a Vaporizer Pen
As with any device, there are some best practices to keep in mind. The most important, of course, is regular cleaning. It doesn’t have to be after every use, but cleaning once a week (assuming regular use) will significantly extend the life of your pen.
The cleaning process is simple—first, disassemble the pen and remove any residue or ash from the chamber. Then use a small tube cleaner (these are sometimes included with the pen) and clean it thoroughly. Of course, this only applies to those with refillable cartridges. If it’s disposable, your only task is to throw it away when it’s empty.
Unscrew the mouthpiece, if possible, and rinse it with warm water. Do not use water on any other parts of the vaporizer, as this could cause extensive damage to the device.
In addition, simply following the basic steps when vaporizing is enough to prevent a mess that needs cleaning. It’s really simple—just use the appropriate amount of herb or concentrate. If you’re using disposable cartridges, you have nothing to worry about. However, those with refillable cartridges will need to make sure no material leaks from the pen before refilling. This ensures minimal residue to clean when the time comes.
Pros and Cons
As we’ve already mentioned, vaporizer pens have many advantages. However, when discussing them, we must be careful, because objectively speaking, they aren’t an improvement over traditional smoking. It all comes down to personal preference!

Lighting up a joint full of material isn’t exactly a discreet way to enjoy herbs, especially in public. With a vaporizer pen, there are no worries in this regard! The vapor doesn’t produce the unmistakable smell of smoking, which means you can use them practically anywhere without drawing too much attention. In addition, vaporizer pens are small enough to fit in your pocket and are perfectly portable.
Easier dosing
Almost every herb enthusiast has experienced taking too much. This is much less likely to happen when vaporizing. Since it’s easier to control how much active ingredient you consume, these devices are often recommended for medical users.
Easy to use
Inserting a cartridge into the vaporizer and pressing a button isn’t rocket science. In fact, it couldn’t be much simpler. Compared to the art of rolling a joint or even using other, more complex vaporizers, vaporizer pens are very convenient and easy to use.
Cleanliness
Since your vaporizer pen won’t produce smoke, you’ll be able to enjoy a much cleaner herbal experience. Likewise, when you fill the cartridge or tank, it won’t create as much of a mess as smoking does. We all know the mess that’s left on the table after you’re done. At the end of your session, you also won’t have to deal with smelly ash residue.
Disadvantages of Vaporizer Pens
They require regular maintenance
If you get a cheap disposable vaporizer pen, this might not be an issue. However, if you have a “real” vaporizer pen, you’ll definitely want to keep it in good shape so you can enjoy it for a long time. Because all kinds of sticky resin will build up during vaping, regular cleaning and maintenance are necessary. You should also avoid exposing your vaporizer pen to conditions where it could get wet or dirty.
You may need to adjust your dosage
Concentrates are usually much more potent than flowers. So if you’ve just switched from smoking to vaping, you might be better off starting with a smaller dose of herbs and gradually increasing it.
They require charging
Yes, you have to charge your vaporizer pen, but think about it: charging a vaporizer is generally easier than grinding herbs and then rolling them into a paper. The only time this might be a problem is when you’re out and about with a dying vaporizer and no charger. Experienced users have two or more batteries and an external charger, so they can use one battery while the other charges. This ensures they always have a charged battery.
