What causes a stuffy nose?
We have all experienced a runny nose. It is an inflammation of the nasal mucosa, which becomes irritated and swollen. If mucus prevents drainage from the nose, sinusitis can also occur. Pressure in the sinuses causes tension and pain around the eyes and cheeks, sometimes even leading to a temporary loss of smell and taste. This is accompanied by characteristic nasal congestion, fever, and fatigue.
The nose needs to be cleared, because when it is blocked, bacteria multiply quickly and the disease (e.g., the flu) spreads more easily.
The common cold and “runny nose”
Not all colds are the same. While rhinitis in adults usually proceeds without major problems, it is more risky in children and is more often associated with headaches, toothaches, or middle ear inflammation. It is said that men tolerate this disease worse than women. Who doesn’t know the treacherous “little cold”? But beware, it may not just be a funny stereotype!
There is even research dedicated to this tricky phenomenon. In one such light-hearted study, Kyle Sue, a professor of medicine at Memorial University, finds that hormones affect immunity: testosterone weakens the immune system, while estrogen strengthens it. According to this theory, men are justified in experiencing rhinitis more intensely.
What are the common treatment options?
- Mechanical clearing of the nose (blowing, suction)
- Commonly available medications (drops and sprays to decongest the nasal mucosa, but beware of the active ingredients in these medications, which can easily be addictive)
- Nasal irrigation pot (the saline solution dilutes the nasal mucus and allows it to drain more quickly)
- Humidification and inhalation (essential oils such as mint, lavender, thyme, cinnamon)
- Hydrotherapy (immersing your hands in hot water)
- Diet (to warm up and strengthen immunity, e.g., broths, garlic, citrus fruits)
- Antibiotics (only if the illness is bacterial in origin)
If a runny nose is a chronic problem, surgical correction of the nasal passages may be a solution. The procedure involves widening the nasal passages to improve airflow and prevent further mucus buildup and congestion.
Can CBD help?
The popularity of CBD, an active ingredient in cannabis, has been growing in recent years. It is a good companion for mental and physical well-being. In addition, it can help with various ailments; for example, its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects are well known. Unlike THC, it has no psychoactive effects and is legal in the Czech Republic.
The direct effect of CBD on the common cold has not yet been proven by any specific research. What we do know, however, is that a stuffy nose is an indicator that our endocannabinoid system is out of balance. CBD can help by stimulating this system, thereby boosting immunity and helping the body fight the pathogens responsible for the stuffy nose.
In addition to contributing to overall well-being, cannabidiol can soothe mucous membranes, prevent excessive mucus production, relieve headaches and pressure around the eyes, maintain low body temperature, and improve sleep, which is disrupted by a stuffy nose.
In short, CBD gives the body the tools it needs to recover. Moreover, there is no risk of addiction, as is the case with the active ingredients in commonly available medications for nasal congestion. Side effects are rarely reported with CBD and are mild in nature.

How to use CBD for a runny nose?
Each form of CBD product is absorbed differently, with varying bioavailability and, consequently, varying onset times. Nasal spray appears to be the best option for treating a runny nose. It works immediately and, in addition to CBD, contains other substances that help soothe the mucous membrane, such as eucalyptus or capsaicin. The spray creates a strong barrier inside the nose that prevents increased sensitivity, mucus production, and further congestion.
CBD drops and CBD capsules are suitable for preventive use or to alleviate other symptoms associated with the illness. Smoking can worsen nasal and sinus congestion, so vaping may be an alternative for smokers.
Summary
A runny nose is a sign of a weakened body and can sometimes cause us a lot of trouble. A stuffy nose is not only unpleasant, it can also contribute to the further development of the disease. When treating it, it is of course essential to mechanically remove the mucus, and humidifying the air, rinsing the nose, and immersing your hands in warm water also help.
Pharmacies will recommend medications with active ingredients that reliably soothe the nasal mucosa, but these can be addictive, so it is not recommended to use them for long periods of time or frequently. If you are considering products with CBD, the most effective and fastest solution is CBD nasal sprays, which provide relief without the risk of addiction. CBD drops and capsules are more preventive in nature.
