How Vaporizer Batteries Work

Rechargeable or removable vaporizer batteries work similarly to standard batteries used in the home and in most electrical appliances. Batteries store and retain electricity and power the vaporizer.

Most manufacturers often specify the battery type on the packaging or in the user manual.

It is essential to know which type of battery your vaporizer is compatible with. Many portable vaporizers are designed to work with replaceable lithium-ion batteries.

Battery types: 18650, 20700, and 21700

Batteries are most commonly classified by size, with the first two digits representing the width and the next three the height—measured in millimeters.

18650, 20700, and 21700 vape batteries differ not only in size but also in their capabilities—output power, capacity, and current.

Generally, the larger the battery, the higher the capacity and power.

The 18650 battery resembles traditional disposable AA batteries in appearance. Most devices are equipped with a replaceable 18650 battery, but some are designed for larger 21700 or 20700 cells, which may also be compatible with 18650.

Battery Power, Voltage, and Capacity

A typical 18650 vape battery is fully charged to 4.2 V (this value represents the voltage that affects battery performance).

The voltage of batteries for vaporizers is 3.2–4.2 V when fully charged.

Higher voltage means the vaporizer generates more power, leading to more intense heating of the material and greater vapor production.

Battery capacity is an indicator of “battery life” per charge. The capacity of vape pen batteries is usually measured in milliampere-hours (mAh).

A high mAh value indicates greater battery capacity. Depending on the power draw, the battery will last longer between charges.

Most non-adjustable batteries (where the output voltage cannot be manually set) have an output voltage of 3.7 V.

With adjustable batteries, you can adjust the output voltage or power according to your preferences (used in more advanced and powerful devices; these are known as “modes,” and this feature is useful for experienced vapers).

510 batteries: just attach the cartridge and vape

The simplest type of vape battery is the 510-threaded battery. It is one of the smallest types you can buy.

It charges either via a USB port or via the included charger, which screws directly into the battery’s thread.

How to choose the right battery based on capacity

Long battery life may be the most important factor for you when making your choice. In that case, you’ll need a model with a high capacity, such as 3000 mAh. This number indicates how long the battery can be used before it is completely drained.

However, by opting for high capacity, you sacrifice continuous discharge performance (the battery’s ability to maintain stable output without a significant drop during use). This is because it will take longer for the battery to start generating power.

If you plan to vape at lower wattages (below 40 W), this isn’t a major issue. If you want to vape at high wattages, invest in a battery with a higher discharge current.

How power affects vapor production

Vaping at lower power settings (10–40 W) means the vaporizer produces less heat and energy when heating herbs. This results in a milder, less intense vapor.

If you vape at higher power settings (40–200 W), the vaporizer generates higher temperatures and more intense vapor. Devices rated at 50 W or 75 W are common, but there are also much more powerful vaporizers.

For example, a 1100 mAh battery powering a 1-ohm coil will be able to deliver 3.7 V for longer than an 800 mAh battery, even though they have the same output voltage.

Battery capacity also depends on the coil used, as a coil with lower resistance will draw more power than one with higher resistance.
