Deep and peaceful sleep plays a vital role in our mental and physical health. And to achieve that, we often do not hesitate to resort to so-called sleeping pills. Although they can indeed help us fall asleep faster, they come with numerous side effects that one should be aware of.

Drowsiness during the day, heartburn, fluctuations in appetite, or changes in stool are common. Tingling in the extremities or trembling may occur. Long-term use can lead to dependence and an increased risk of overdose.But there is a safer alternative.

Scientific studies have shown that certain cannabinoids, compounds naturally found in cannabis, can have a positive effect on sleep. Specifically, they talk about cannabidiol (CBD). At the same time, recent findings suggest that cannabinol, or CBN, can be an even more useful aid.

Some studies highlight its sedative and hypnotic properties. However, further research is needed to sufficiently confirm these findings. So if you have trouble sleeping, CBD/CBN oil might help you relax in the evening.

Although CBN is the third most common cannabinoid found in cannabis plants after THC and CBD, its concentration in the plants is an order of magnitude lower than that of the first two cannabinoids (typically 1 to 2%). When choosing an oil, it is therefore a good idea to also pay attention to the type of extract from which the resulting oil is derived. We distinguish between 3 types of extract: isolate, broad-spectrum, and full-spectrum extract.

Oils made solely from CBD isolate contain a form of CBD that has been chemically purified of other compounds found in the cannabis plant. Therefore, they contain no terpenes, flavonoids, or other substances.

In contrast, broad-spectrum oils contain most of the naturally occurring compounds. However, they are specifically deprived of THC and are suitable for users who prefer products without even trace amounts of THC.

Finally, full-spectrum oils or extracts contain all the important compounds. They therefore contain cannabinoids, including a legal trace amount of THC, aromatic terpenes, flavonoids, phenols, sterols, esters, and proteins.

So, if we want to maximize the effects of CBN, it’s worth reaching for CBN oil, which contains not only CBN itself but also other compounds from hemp, such as cannabinoids and terpenes. These compounds work synergistically to enhance and strengthen their therapeutic effects.

The use of these oils also carries several potential side effects, though these are usually mild. They include fatigue, drowsiness, and dizziness, but the truth is that they disappear on their own after a while. And the psychoactive effect? Compared to THC, it is only about 10%. Furthermore, CBN can produce relaxing and sedative effects at just 2.5 mg.

What to know about CBD and CBN oil dosage

So how should CBD and CBN oils be dosed correctly? An in-depth 2017 study by the U.S. National Institutes of Health found that there is simply no universal CBD dose—or, for that matter, CBN dose—that would be suitable for everyone. This is due to many factors, such as age, metabolism, weight, and the type of condition being treated. It is important to remember that oils are not medications, so it is not possible to determine an exact dosage as with pharmaceuticals.

We must assess our individual responses to CBN oil and CBD oil on a case-by-case basis. If a small dose is not enough for our insomnia, it is possible to increase it. It is therefore always better to start with a low dose; in the case of CBN, approximately one drop under the tongue half an hour before bedtime.

If the dose is insufficient, increase it by one drop at a time. It is also possible to take CBN in capsule form. However, taking it under the tongue provides a faster onset of effects, as CBN is absorbed directly into the bloodstream. Sedative effects usually manifest half an hour after ingestion.
