CBD Topicals Guide: Roll-On Gels, Creams and Balms Compared

CBD topicals are cosmetics: products you apply to the skin rather than swallow. That changes what the label can tell you, which rules apply, and how to compare strengths. This guide explains the four common formats, what “350 mg” or “3000 mg” means on a tube, which ingredients create the cooling or warming sensation, and how to use them sensibly. What the milligrams mean on a topical

The number is the total CBD in the container, exactly as with oils – so a 3000 mg balm in a large tin can be less concentrated than a 350 mg roll-on in a small tube. To compare like with like, divide by the container size where it is printed (mg per ml or per gram). Two further points: topicals sit on the skin, so the FSA’s 10 mg-a-day advice for CBD in food does not apply directly; and “hemp roll-on” listings such as the Cutleaf range quote hemp extract rather than CBD – check the label for the CBD figure if that is what you want.

Cooling, warming and unscented: the ingredients that matter

• Menthol creates the cooling sensation in “freeze” gels. It can sting on freshly shaved or broken skin.
• Warming agents – typically capsicum extract, camphor or similar – give warming gels their heat; check the ingredient list, wash your hands afterwards and keep them away from the eyes.
• Essential oils such as lavender, tea tree, eucalyptus or lemongrass add scent; the unscented cream is the choice if you react to fragrance.
• Full-spectrum extracts (for example the Koi balm) contain other hemp compounds and a natural hemp smell; isolate-based gels are odour-neutral apart from added fragrance.

How to use a CBD topical safely

1. Patch-test a small area and wait 24 hours before wider use.
2. Apply a thin layer to clean, dry, unbroken skin; do not apply to wounds, rashes or mucous membranes.
3. Wash your hands after applying menthol or warming products.
4. Do not combine with heat pads or tight wraps unless the label says you can.
5. Keep out of reach of children and pets; store below 25 °C with the cap closed.

The rules that apply in the UK

• Topicals are regulated as cosmetics in Great Britain. A cosmetic must have a safety assessment and a named responsible person, and must list its ingredients (INCI names) on the packaging – a product with no ingredient list is a warning sign.
• The CBD in a cosmetic must still meet the controlled-drugs “exempt product” test: no more than 1 mg of THC or other controlled cannabinoids per container.
• Cosmetics may not claim to treat or cure a medical condition. If a product is marketed for pain relief or a skin disease, it is being sold as a medicine and would need a licence.
• Cannabinoid content is as declared by the brand and a Certificate of Analysis can be requested before you order. Adults 18+ only.

Comparing prices

Roll-ons are the entry point at around £20 for 350 mg and £25 for 1500 mg on our current listings, which makes the 1500 mg versions much better value per milligram if you have used the format before. Does CBD from a topical get into the bloodstream?

Topicals act locally on the skin; they are not designed to deliver CBD into the bloodstream the way oral products are, which is why they are regulated as cosmetics.

Is a 1500 mg roll-on stronger than a 3000 mg balm?

It depends on container size. Divide the milligrams by the millilitres or grams to compare concentration; the total alone does not tell you.

Can I use a CBD gel on my face?

Menthol and warming gels are not intended for the face. Use a product formulated for facial skin and patch-test first.

Will a CBD topical show on a drug test?

Isolate-based topicals contain no THC. Full-spectrum balms contain trace THC, though topical use is not expected to produce a positive test. Check the COA if it matters.

How long does a roll-on last?

Used once or twice a day on a small area, a standard roll-on typically lasts one to two months; the period-after-opening symbol on the pack tells you how long it stays good once opened.
