CBD Oil and Skin: What Research Suggests About Acne, Eczema and Ageing

CBD appears in more and more creams, balms and serums. The research behind the skincare claims is early – mostly cells in a dish and a handful of tiny human studies – so here is a clear account of what has been shown, what has not, and how CBD skincare is used in practice.

This article is general information, not medical advice. Cannabinoid products sold by THC Vape Stores are not medicines and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition. If you have a health condition, take medication, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, speak to a healthcare professional before using any cannabinoid product. Adults 18+ only.

How CBD is thought to act in skin

Skin cells carry cannabinoid receptors and related targets (CB1, CB2, TRPV channels). Laboratory studies show CBD can influence sebum production, inflammatory signalling and oxidative stress in skin cells. These are mechanisms observed in cell cultures and animal tissue – a starting point for research, not a demonstrated effect in people’s skin.

Acne: what has been studied

The most-cited paper is Oláh et al., 2014 (Journal of Clinical Investigation): in cultured human sebocytes, CBD reduced excess sebum production and dampened inflammatory responses. That is an in-vitro result. There are no large controlled trials of CBD skincare in people with acne, and CBD products are not licensed acne treatments. The NHS-recommended options – benzoyl peroxide, topical retinoids, antibiotics where prescribed – remain the evidence-based route for acne that bothers you.

Eczema, psoriasis and irritation

Palmieri et al., 2019 reported that a CBD-enriched ointment applied twice daily for three months improved skin measurements and symptom scores in 20 people with psoriasis, atopic dermatitis or scarring. It was small and had no placebo group. Emollients and prescribed topical treatments remain first line; anyone with eczema or psoriasis should discuss new products with a GP or pharmacist, particularly as fragranced or essential-oil-heavy balms can irritate sensitive skin.

Ageing and antioxidants

CBD is an antioxidant in laboratory tests, and antioxidants are a plausible ingredient class for skincare. No study has shown that CBD reduces wrinkles or slows skin ageing in people. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is the one intervention with strong evidence.

UK rules for CBD skincare

CBD cosmetics must comply with UK cosmetics regulation (safety assessment, product notification, ingredient listing) and cannot make medicinal claims – “treats eczema” or “cures acne” turns a cosmetic into an unlicensed medicine. Hemp-derived CBD is permitted in cosmetics; the product must still meet the Misuse of Drugs controlled-cannabinoid limits. Look for a full INCI ingredient list and a batch Certificate of Analysis.

How CBD skincare is used in practice

  • Balms and salves suit targeted application; creams and lotions spread over larger areas; roll-on gels are convenient for quick use. See our guide to roll-ons, gels, creams and balms.
  • Patch-test on the inner forearm for 24 hours before wider use.
  • Topical CBD acts locally; very little reaches the bloodstream, so the FSA’s 10 mg daily food-supplement guidance does not apply to cosmetics – but do not apply to broken skin.
  • Check what else is in the product: carrier oils, menthol, camphor and essential oils often account for the sensation people notice.
