Exploring the Anti-Inflammatory Properties of CBD Flower and CBD Oil

CBD Flower and CBD Oil: What Is Known About Their Anti-Inflammatory Properties

“Anti-inflammatory” is one of the most common phrases on CBD packaging. Inflammation is a real biological process and CBD does affect it in the laboratory – but the leap from a petri dish to a person is large. This article explains the evidence and how CBD flower and CBD oil differ in practice.

This article is general information, not medical advice. Cannabinoid products sold by THC Vape Stores are not medicines and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition. If you have a health condition, take medication, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, speak to a healthcare professional before using any cannabinoid product. Adults 18+ only.

What inflammation is

Inflammation is the immune system’s response to injury or infection: redness, heat, swelling and pain in the short term, and – when it persists – a factor in conditions from arthritis to inflammatory bowel disease. Long-term inflammatory conditions are diagnosed and managed by doctors; the treatments with strong evidence are prescribed medicines, physiotherapy and lifestyle measures.

What laboratory and animal studies show

  • In cell studies CBD reduces the release of several inflammatory signalling molecules (cytokines) and acts as an antioxidant.
  • In rodent models – for example transdermal CBD in arthritic rats (Hammell et al., 2016) – CBD reduced joint swelling and pain behaviours.
  • These findings are consistent and repeatable, which is why researchers remain interested. They are not evidence of an effect in humans: doses, delivery routes and disease models differ enormously.

What human evidence exists

Human trials of CBD alone for inflammatory conditions are few and small. The clearest human data concern safety rather than benefit: the World Health Organization’s 2018 review found CBD generally well tolerated, with possible interactions with medicines processed by the liver. No CBD product is licensed in the UK as an anti-inflammatory, and NICE does not recommend cannabis-based products for chronic pain outside trials (NG144, 2019).

CBD flower vs CBD oil

  • CBD flower is the dried bud of hemp, containing CBD plus minor cannabinoids and terpenes. It is typically vaporised or used in cooking after decarboxylation. Under UK law raw flower is not an “exempt product”, whatever its THC content – read our UK legal guide before buying.
  • CBD oil is hemp extract in a carrier oil, taken under the tongue. Strength is labelled per bottle; our strength guide converts that to milligrams per drop. Full-spectrum oils contain traces of other cannabinoids; isolates contain CBD only – see full-spectrum vs H4CBD.
  • Whichever format, a batch Certificate of Analysis is the only way to confirm the cannabinoid content (how to read a COA).

Dosing and safety

The Food Standards Agency advises healthy adults not to take more than 10 mg of CBD a day from food supplements, and says CBD is not recommended for under-18s, people taking medication, or anyone pregnant or breastfeeding. Talk to a pharmacist before combining CBD with anti-inflammatory or immunosuppressant medicines. Treat “anti-inflammatory” on a supplement label as a description of laboratory findings, not a promise about your body.
